We’ve gathered our top choices for things to do with the kids in Marrakech (in no particular order!):
1. Visit the unmissable great open square of Djemaa el Fna in the early evening – see acrobats and magicians, and explore the many food and craft stalls.
2. Take a tour by horse-drawn carriage to see the vibrant Old City, looking out for palaces and souks. This is a great way to explore the city without tiring out little (and long) legs.
3. Sample traditional Moroccan food with your kids – tagine is a great one for them to try, named after the clay pot that it’s cooked in.
4. Visit the beautiful Ben Youssef Koranic School to admire the intricate decorations and learn about its original use as an Islamic college.
5. Go for a ride on a camel! Kids will have a great time on this alternative mode of transport – jump on a brightly decorated camel and go for a walk in the desert.
6. Explore the Saadian Tombs – mysterious stones marking the gravestones of long lost Saadian royalty, and learn more about the history and religion of Morocco.
7. Visit a tannery, a unique and pungent experience not for the faint-hearted! Learn about the three different stages of processing animal hide, including one where the hide is put in a vat full of bird excrement for 25 days!
8. Get lost in the souks – Marrakech is renowned for its magical souks and markets, each one selling something different, from wooden snakes to colourful blankets and bags. It is easy to spend hours ambling from one stall to another in the labyrinth of little alleys, and however far you go it is never difficult to make your way back to the Djemaa el Fna.
9. Visit Bahia Palace, a magnificent 19th century palace and one of the masterpieces of Moroccan architecture. Explore the palace’s gardens, patios, arches and fountains.
10. Haggle! Have a go at bargaining for any souvenirs that have caught your eye. Haggling is the norm here and is also a great way to get to know the locals.
11. Head to Jardin Majorelle and explore the beautiful, colourful gardens in a tranquil atmosphere away from the bustling souks. Your kids will have fun checking out the many different types of cactus.
12. Enjoy a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice. Orange trees are everywhere in the alleys and courtyards of Marrakech so it is easy to see why there are so many orange juice stalls in the Djemaa el Fna.
13. Get a henna tattoo with a Moroccan design. It should last for a few days so is best done at the end of the trip so your kids can show their friends when they get home. Avoid the henna sellers in the square as they sometimes mix the ink with other things that lead to skin irritations.
